handmade card

Hand making cards is a creative process that I absolutely love to do!  Deciding what type of card to make (birthday, holiday, sympathy) and what the end result should look like are just two of the many steps it takes to achieve a beautiful card.

Card Making Process

While often the entire creative process of card making starts and ends all in my head, I do have specific steps that I accomplish –

  • The first step is to decide what type of handmade card to make – will it be a birthday card, a holiday card, or a unique card just to show you care.  Deciding what type of card to make is important – without this step, you will sit and stare not sure what to create.
  • Envisioning what the result will look like is usually the next step I take.  While it does not always end up how I originally envisioned, it gives a sort of starting point.
  • Creating the base of the card is next.  Cutting the paper, folding, and deciding colors to use are typically the next phase of handmade card making.
  • From here, deciding the sayings to use and will it be done by using a stamp, die cut, embossing, or cutout are all important decisions.
  • Creating and setting aside any embellishments to use on the card comes next.  Cutting out any shapes with die cuts, coloring with markers, or deciding on specific gems to use all will bring the card together.

Once all the phases above have been completed, you can then start putting your card together.  I typically lay it out first before taping or gluing anything in place.  Place your items and step back and look at it from different angles – is it how you envisioned?

"You will find the layout that speaks to you and then you can fasten everything to the card."

The creative process for handmade cards is a unique skill that not everyone has the ability to do.  Taking pieces of paper and turning it into a work of art that will make someone smile is the ultimate reward!  Card making is one of those creative outlets that I find extremely rewarding and will continue to do!
